story time: spn edition

Okay, so I don’t think I’ve ever told the story about how I got into Supernatural (aka that show I can’t quit). It’s been about two years. The summer of 2013, I spent fourth of July with my mom’s family, which meant getting to see my little sister, Bird. At the time, she was fourteen.

Upon walking into the apartment, my sister flings herself at me. After the hugging, OMG YOU’RE ALMOST TALLER THAN ME BIRD WTF, and etc. she hands me a cheap ring that is silver colored. It’s heavy-set, and gleaming. I see one just like it on her pinkie. “Does this fit you?” she asks me.

Fic Roundup and Rec

For Remix Redux StripySock wrote a lovely remix of Blankets. They do a lovely job of capturing the tension between Cas and Sam at the start of s10. Go read it! :D

The fic I wrote was:

Title: From Where We Stand in History
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Castiel, Anna
Rating: G
Word Count: 1036
Notes: This is a remix of emmademarais 's story History and Words Left Unspoken.
Summary: There is history between Castiel and Anna, but it can change nothing.

AO3 | DW | LJ

This week, I also finished:

Title: don't you want to share the guilt?
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Dean/Kevin
Rating: E
Word Count: 4,289
Notes: Contains major character death, dubious consent, rough sex, and non explicit references to depression. Title lifted from Kate Nash's "Don't You Want to Share the Guilt?" This is set after what's yours is mine.
Summary: Kevin never considered that living with yourself after surviving might be worse than trying to survive. Especially when you're the one that sent Sam Winchester to his death.

Meme and Writing Productivity

First, been playing around with this writing pacemaker all morning as I try to be more productive over the summer. If you're someone like me that likes having fluctuating, but real goals, there are a lot of nifty features here.

Second, stole a meme from frozen_delight about writing. Ask me a number, and I'll answer. And I'd love to ask you, if you want to play, too :D

 1. Describe yourself how you would describe a character you’re introducing.
2. Is there any specific ritual you go through while/before/after your writing?
3. What is your absolute favorite kind of fic to write?
4. Are there any other fic writers you admire? If so, who and why?
5. How many words can you write if you sit down and concentrate intensely for an hour?
6. First fic/pairing you wrote for? (If no pairing, describe the plot)
7. Inspiration, time, or motivation. Choose two.
8. Why do you choose to write?
9. Do you ever have plans to write anything other than fic?
10. What inspires you the most?
11. Weirdest thing you’ve ever written/thought about writing/etc.?
12. A fic you wish you had written better, and why?
13. Favorite fic from another author?
14. Your favorite side pairings to put in?
15. Your guilty writing pleasure?
16. Do you have structured ideas of how your story is supposed to go, or make it up as you write?
17. Would yo describe yourself as a fast writer?
18. How old were you when you started writing?
19. Why did you start writing?
20. 4 sentences from your work that you’re proud of?

WHYYYY

Replaying DA2 makes me even more frustrated with the direction they took in DA: I. URGH.

Dear Rarepair Writer

Dear Writer,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write me a fic. I’m super pumped to see what you come up with!

I am really easy to please. I like everything from fluff to angst, to hurt/comfort, and basically anything else you can think of. I'm a big fan of exploring power imbalances in ships, so if you want to take that route, I'd be thrilled.

Pretty much whatever you would like to write would make me happy. I do prefer fics to be at least semi-related to canon: if you'd like to write an AU, I prefer ones that are canon-related. I also prefer to avoid rape/noncon. I’ll try and give you some direction by fandom, but really, I’d be happy with nearly anything.

Like I said, I’m really really easy to please. I like a wide variety of things, and the ideas I’ve put here are just something to get you started thinking if you’re having trouble.

Thanks,

Writing

I have a lot of projects I'm working on right now, and some more yet to come.

Editing:

don't you want to share the guilt? (breaky s9!AU where Sam dies, Kevin is left to survive, and Dean/Kevin happens)
Secret Remix fic

Writing:

Secret Summergen fic
ABO s10 Sevin fic (with alpha!Kevin/alpha!Sam, not a fix it)

To Come:

Rarepairfest fic
Linda/Jody breaky fic set after "this banging with fire"
My two claims from areyougame:
Final Fantasy VIII, Selphie: The End - no one should have so much power
Final Fantasy VII, Barret/Tifa: Hurt/Comfort - he's not the best medic but he does his best

I've also shifted a lot of my fic over to archive on LJ and DW, to see if I like the format better. Experimenting to see what works and doesn't work in terms of archiving my fic. [community profile] cityofladies on dreamwidth and lacitedesdames on livejournal. We'll see if it sticks. (I'll still be posting to AO3, and I'll provide links to new fics here.)

Dear Summergen Writer

Dear Writer,

First, thank you for taking time to write a fic for me! I’m really excited to see what you come up with.

Chronic Migraine, Kevin Tran, and me

One of the many, many reasons I think I respond to/identify with Kevin is because I read him as having chronic migraines, like I do. I wouldn’t say I consider Kevin as representative of folks with migraines, rather I think it’s one way his character can be read.

rambling self-indulgent post is self-indulgentCollapse )

tl;dr: My disability affects how I read and write Kevin Tran, and I’m mostly okay with that.

(Does anybody know any good media with people who have migraines/chronic pain and/or disabilities? Also, to reiterate, I’m not claiming that Kevin represent chronic migraine or chronic pain of any type—this is just how I, personally, read Kevin. It’s not a suggestion for how others should read Kevin.)

Two Things

The portrayal of the asari make me deeply uncomfortable, especially when coupled with the fact you can romance literally every asari squad member.

In happier news, rarepairfest is now open for nominations! This is a fun fest for small and large fandoms. It's also one of the most fun challenges I've participated in in general. This entry was originally posted at http://mako-lies.dreamwidth.org/143621.html.

Re-playing FFXII

Wow, I missed a lot of things when I played FFXII when I was 16.

The entire conversation between Larsa and Penelo about Vayne, and Archadia's role in Dalmasca, and the realities of the war for Penelo vs. Larsa's conceptions of the war completely went over my head.

Basch is also making more sense to me as a character this go-round. I did not get him at all when I originally played the game, even though I really liked him.

Belated Springfling post

For Springfling, I received a lovely Linda/Jody fic by lyryk for the prompts "where soft rains fell" and "dust shall eat the days." Seriously, it is so wonderful.

Title: Ignorance
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Sarah
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,020
Notes: Written for frozen_delight over at spnspringfling
Summary: Sarah and Sam see each other again. It's not the meeting of Sarah's dreams.
The car gleams familiarly as she passes by the library.Collapse ) This entry was originally posted at http://mako-lies.dreamwidth.org/142368.html.

Age of Ultron

Saw Age of Ultron yesterday, and IDK. It was all right? Granted, I've never dug how Joss writes Tony and Steve (and Steve is one of my faves), so my expectations were pretty low. Overall, I enjoyed it I guess. But mostly felt pretty meh.

Only two weeks left, and I'm done with the semester. Thank goodness.

(red light) green light

Title: (red light) green light
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Kevin
Rating: E
Word Count: 1,450
Notes: Written for Gen prompt Bingo. Contains dubious consent, whipping, and poorly communicated kink, potentially the consent issues associated with angelic possession. Set between 9.02 and 9.09.
Summary: Kevin helps Sam unwind, but the belt is really psyching him out.
This isn't so bad, Kevin thinks. Stupidly.Collapse ) This entry was originally posted at http://mako-lies.dreamwidth.org/141219.html.

School Update

Talking about Holocaust books (Night, Maus, and The Book Thief) In my Adolescent Lit class today. I'm leading discussion on The Book Thief, which is difficult, but we're talking about "why teach the Holocaust," and I think a lot of good came from that discussion, even if an uncomfortable one. Too many things are going on. Doesn't help that the weather here keeps shifting, which means my head refuses to stop trying to kill me. BUT, but, Persepolis remains such an enjoyable book. Then, I get to read The Book Thief.

Brief update to say:

Realizing there is no convenient time this semester to write/fandom. Goal: create time to write/fandom and protect that time. I've grown a lot as a writer over the last few months and I want to keep doing it.

Seizing bite-sized chunks of time may be a potential solution? Goal of weekly time devoted to writing, to free myself of daily time goals (that I can't uphold as combination between other people requiring time from me/my health condition)? The Illusionist

Title: The Illusionist
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Crowley/Kevin
Rating: T
Word Count: 1,450
Notes: Written for SPN Pairing Bingo. Contains imagined pseudo-incest, past possession, mindfuck, mentions of torture, imagined gore, and descent into madness. Set between 9.02 and 9.06. You can read it here or at AO3.
Summary: Kevin is slipping. And Crowley won't get out of his head.
Blood flows from Crowley's wrists to the floor; Kevin can smell it, can nearly taste it, and his stomach flips over and over, bile rising back up into his already-raw throat.Collapse ) This entry was originally posted at http://mako-lies.dreamwidth.org/139554.html.

Masterpost: this banging with fire

I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with manzanita_crow . Here is the lovely piece of art they created.

Title: this banging with fire
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters: Sam, Kevin, Dean, Linda
Rating: T
Word Count: ~11,000
Notes: Thanks to balder12 for betaing this for me. Spoilers through 10.09. Title from Victor Hernández Cruz's "Latin & Soul".
Warnings: some mention of torture, and allusions to PTSD.
Summary: Kevin teaches Sam to play the cello. As it turns out, ghosts don't necessarily make the best teachers.
